Last week I went on a search for some interesting yarns to create a knit hat for this collection. Not being an expert knitter (yet) I took the advice of Riet Peters, who teaches handknitting at Parsons, and will begin by knitting a sizable rectangle, which I will then drape into a knit hat.
These were some of the yarns I selected - a thin linen-steel blend, another thin but amazingly soft copper-bamboo blend, two different kinds of flat linen "paper" yarns, and a Peruvian Alpaca tweed. For the time being I am working with the flat black and white 100% linen fiber that I got from Habu. The concept is to create a hat that has the overall look and texture of straw but is in fact a knit... the color and texture takes me into a Sophia Loren/Marcello Mastroianni film. I picture the final hat worn with a serious cat eye and dark sunglasses.
