thoughts on paper

Last summer, the Met hosted a photography exhibition called "Hipsters, Hustlers and Handball Players," where I came across the following photo by Leon Levinstein:

The idea of paper bag hats has been at the back of my mind pretty much non-stop since then.  After reviewing some of my hat sketches, Julia mentioned paper as a possible material for one of the hats.  This idea could not be more thrilling, especially when I think of the incredible assortment of paper available at New York Central Art Supply.

Of course, the notion of paper accessories is nothing new even in the context of luxury.  Who can forget the paper hats and accessories seen at the Chanel Couture Spring 2009 show?

But paper seems to be in the air as of late.  On my way home from Manhatco on Friday, I passed by Macy's at Herald Square and encountered the following sight in the windows:

These paper sculptures were designed by Pratt students and selected by designer Ralph Pucci.  (You can read more about the Pratt + Paper + Ralph Pucci project here.)  Even as I took the photos, I had already decided to devote a post to this, but imagine my surprise when I received this email from Julia yesterday:

Subject: look at this one
Body:    it looks like a paper chain of fabric.

I then looked at some of the detail photos I'd taken at Macy's:

Coincidence?  I think not.  We'll see where this takes me.
